The United States seeks to reclaim 2.4 million dollars worth of Bitcoin seized from a ransomware group
The American government has filed a civil lawsuit seeking to seize 20.2 Bitcoin ( worth 2.4 million USD) that was seized by the FBI Dallas from a wallet related to the hacker group Chaos. This is part of a plan to build a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve under the order of former President Trump. The Bitcoin is alleged to have originated from ransomware attacks.
The government of America is believed to hold about 198,000 BTC, but a FOIA request reveals that the USMS ( only holds over 28,000 BTC. Experts suggest that many other agencies like the FBI, DEA, and DOJ are also holding Bitcoin, and most of this BTC has not been sold.
As of the end of July, only three states, Texas, Arizona, and New Hampshire, have passed Bitcoin reserve laws, although more than 30 states have proposed similar bills.
