Cryptography | Study Reveals Memecoin Becomes the Best Performing Sector This Year

The NFTevening study recorded that digital crypto assets in the memecoin sector became a profitable narrative for investors this year. This narrative has become the only one that has "survived" amid the ongoing geopolitical turmoil.
In detail, during the first 5 months of 2025, the memecoin category recorded an average profit and loss (PnL) that was positive at 33%. On the other hand, the layer 1 sector became the second best-performing sector in terms of profitability despite being down 7.3%.
It is known that 18.8% of memecoin projects have successfully made profits. This figure may seem simple, but when compared to the artificial intelligence sector (AI), the obtained figure is higher by 117%, around 8.6%.
The layer 2 narrative tokens have been the worst-performing sector throughout this year. They recorded a performance drop of 51.3% compared to the gamefi narrative, which also saw a decline of 46.25%.
